Why SEL Programs Fail: The Essential Element of Adult Emotional Health

By Dr. Amber Hill May 21, 2026

Many school districts invest heavily in social-emotional learning (SEL) curricula, yet fail to see behavioral improvements or culture shifts. The reason is simple: SEL cannot be taught solely through a workbook or a slide deck. SEL must be caught, not just taught. If the adults in the building are not regulated, the program will fail.

The Mirror Neuron Connection

Children possess mirror neurons that fire in response to the emotional states of adults around them. If a teacher enters the room stressed and reactive, the students' nervous systems will mirror that stress. Modeling emotional regulation is the single most powerful SEL tool we possess.

Moving Beyond Curriculum to Culture

Schools must prioritize Adult SEL by providing resources, coaching, and space for educators to manage their own mental wellness. When we support the emotional capacity of our teachers, they can naturally model regulation for their students.
